Shaoyang University was founded in 1958, and its medical specialty can be traced back to 1906. It was upgraded to a university in 2002 by the merger of the former Shaoyang Normal Higher Specialized School and the former Shaoyang Higher Specialized School, and Shaoyang Medical Higher Specialized School was merged into it in 2016.
