As the first petroleum school of New China, Liaoning Petrochemical University (LNPU) was founded in Dalian in 1950, relocated to Fushun in 1953 and renamed Fushun Petroleum Institute in 1958. When transferred to the governance of the Liaoning Provincial Government in February, 2000, the institution changed its name to Liaoning Shihua University with the approval of the Ministry of Education (MOE) in February, 2002.
